Card payments: getting started

A guide to setting up card payments in your online shop: how to get a payment gateway and make agreements with acquirers.

To accept payment by cards such as Dankort (the Danish debit card), Visa, Mastercard etc., you need 3 things in place:

1: A QuickPay payment gateway – through us. It takes care of secure communication with the payment systems

2: An agreement with a so-called acquirer. This is a company that acts as the link between you and the card issuers

3: Setting up your shop

1: Payment gateway

The payment gateway

  • Is the link between your online shop and the card systems
  • Makes a risk assessment of every new transaction
  • Holds transactions until you capture the money
  • Is used for refunds, e.g. when customers return products

The payment module and gateway cost €30 per month incl. the first 250 transactions, then €0.04 per transaction. It is free for the first 30 days – so you have plenty of time to get agreements with acquirers in place.

Note: The QuickPay payment gateway MUST be ordered through us. If you already have a QuickPay subscription, contact us and have it moved over to Golden Planet, so you don’t end up paying twice.

You can also add MobilePay. It costs €7 per month + €0.14 per transaction.

2: Agreement with an acquirer

The next thing you need in place is an agreement with one or more acquirers.

For Dankort, there is only one company you can get an agreement with, and that is Nets.

For international cards such as Visa and Mastercard, there are several providers on the market. The leading ones in Denmark are Nets and Clearhaus, and your payment gateway with us supports both.

In most cases it pays to have an agreement with Nets for Dankort. Even though most people now have a combined Visa/Dankort, receiving payments by Dankort costs considerably less per transaction. An agreement for Dankort is also required to offer MobilePay (because the payment is “locked” to the card the customer has added to MobilePay).

Here you can see which cards each acquirer supports and how to contact them. The agreement is solely between you and the acquirer(s) you choose – you get prices and terms from the acquirers.

3: Setting up your shop

Before you can set things up in your online shop, you first need an agreement with at least one acquirer.

To set up your shop for card payments, there are 2 things to set up:

  1. Setting up the payment gateway
  2. Setting up the payment module(s) in your shop

You can read about both in this guide to setting up the payment gateway.
