Pop-up and slide-in boxes

On this page

A pop-up or slide-in box is one of the most effective tools for getting more sign-ups to your newsletter. A small box pops up (pop-up) or slides in smoothly from the side (slide-in) and invites the visitor to sign up – often in return for a small discount or a good offer. Experience shows that a well-placed box can increase the number of sign-ups significantly.

You create the box itself with an external provider that specialises in exactly this. Afterwards, you insert the small piece of code you get from the provider in your shop under Other integrations. This guide helps you choose the right provider based on price and simplicity – and shows you how to insert the code.

1. How to choose the right provider

There are many providers, and most of them work in much the same way: you design a box in their tool, choose when it should be shown and connect it to your newsletter system (e.g. Mailchimp). Finally, you get a piece of code to insert in your shop.

When you choose, it is worth looking at:

  • Price: Several providers have a free plan that is more than enough to get started. Entry-level paid plans cost typically about €14–€35 per month.
  • Simplicity: A good drag-and-drop tool with ready-made templates means you can have a box ready in under an hour – without technical help.
  • Integration with your newsletter system: Check that the provider can send sign-ups directly to your system (Mailchimp, Campaign Monitor and others).
  • Mobile-friendliness: A large share of your visitors are on mobile. Make sure the box looks good and is easy to close on a small screen.

Below we have gathered the providers that we think give the most value for money and are the easiest to use. Prices are indicative (as of June 2026) and may change – always check the current price with the provider.

Poptin – best for getting started for free

  • Price: Free plan with up to 1,000 visitors/month and unlimited pop-ups and leads. Paid from about $25/month (without the Poptin logo + more visitors).
  • Simplicity: A very easy drag-and-drop editor with ready-made templates. You can create an account and get started without a payment card.
  • Good to know: Built-in autoresponder and many display rules (exit intent, slide-in, full screen and more).

Getsitecontrol – lots of options at a low price

  • Price: Free plan with 10,000 views/month (with logo). Pro from $19/month, Pro Max $29/month (email campaigns are billed separately).
  • Simplicity: The whole platform is available from the start – pop-ups, forms, email and automations. No payment card required for the free plan.
  • Good to know: A good balance between price and features if you want a little more than just a simple box.

Mailmunch – easy and flexible with a free plan

  • Price: Free plan with unlimited pop-ups/slide-ins for one domain. Paid from about $13.99/month.
  • Simplicity: Easy to use, with ready-made designs that can be customised quickly. Integration with Mailchimp or Campaign Monitor in a few clicks.
  • Good to know: Lots of templates for discount codes, countdowns and “spin-the-wheel” offers.

Mailchimp – best if you already use Mailchimp

  • Price: The pop-up feature is free and built into Mailchimp.
  • Simplicity: The obvious choice if you already send newsletters via Mailchimp – sign-ups land directly on your list.
  • Good to know: Mainly for collecting the sign-ups themselves; fewer design options than the dedicated tools.

OptinMonster – advanced options at a good price

  • Price: From about $9/month (paid annually). Note that full mobile optimisation requires a higher plan.
  • Simplicity: Many campaign types (lightbox, slide-in, top bar and more) and powerful display rules. A few more options to get to grips with.
  • Good to know: Built-in analytics, so you can see how your boxes perform.

Sleeknote – Danish provider with support in Danish

  • Price: More expensive than the others – the cheapest plan costs about €50 per month, and the price rises with the number of visitors.
  • Simplicity: A user-friendly, good-looking tool with a focus on online shops. A Danish company (Aarhus) with support in Danish.
  • Good to know: A good choice if support and advice in Danish matter more to you than price.

BDOW! (formerly Sumo) – generous free plan for smaller sites

  • Price: Free for one domain with up to about 5,000 visits/month. Paid up to about $49/month.
  • Simplicity: Easy to use and popular with smaller shops and blogs.
  • Good to know: Also includes extra tools such as share buttons and simple visitor statistics.

Our quick recommendation: If you want to get started for free and without hassle, start with Poptin or Getsitecontrol. If you already use Mailchimp, its built-in pop-up is the easiest.

3. How to insert the code in “Other integrations”

When you have designed your box with the provider you chose, you get a small piece of code (a “script”). This code is what makes the box work in your shop. You insert it under Other integrations in the admin:

  1. Copy the code from the provider: Find the field with your installation script (often called “Install code”, “Embed code” or “Tracking code”). Select all the code and copy it (Ctrl+C / Cmd+C).
  2. Go to your admin and open the menu item Integration > Other integrations.
  3. Paste the code into the field for external code/script (Ctrl+V / Cmd+V). Paste all the code exactly as you got it – don't remove or change anything in it.
  4. Save your changes.
  5. Check your shop: Open the home page in a new window and check that the box appears as expected. Test on both computer and mobile.

Important: Some integrations contact the external system every time a page loads, which can make your shop slightly slower. So only insert the scripts you actually use, and remove old/unused code again.

For the general guide to “Other integrations” – including examples of other integrations and more details about how the field works – see the guide Open and flexible integration options.

  • Test thoroughly: Check the box in several browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox/Edge) and on both computer and mobile before you consider it finished. In rare cases, scripts can conflict with each other.
  • Keep an eye on speed: The more external scripts you insert, the more they can affect your shop's loading time. Only use what you need.
  • Don't show the box too often: Set it up with the provider so that the box is, e.g., only shown once per visitor, or only after a few seconds/on exit intent – that way you avoid annoying your customers.
  • Remember consent (Danish Marketing Practices Act and GDPR): When you collect email addresses, you must have clear consent to marketing and clearly tell visitors what they are signing up for.
  • Measure the effect: Most providers show how many people see the box and sign up through it. Use the figures to fine-tune the text, offer and timing.

Note: Troubleshooting external third-party scripts is outside regular support and is charged by the hour.
